about

Field Journal:

The first thing that strikes you is the intense heat of the suns. A heat so intense in fact that there is only three hours a day to make music, at dusk, before the freezing chill of night sets in. The liveable area on a planet this small is defined by a belt of foliage on the north and south sides. Their bedtime stories talk of brave explorers penetrating the thick forest only to discover flesh eating trees, ravenous wolfhounds and shadows that both speak and move. Culturally, sacred days are defined by fertility and love dances which resemble a far more lustfully erotic form of Earth’s Butoh, which is rendered all the more bizarre as no one here seems to age beyond the age of 33, in appearance anyway. It was only after a few days of watching people could I determine that the elder members of this civilization could only be spotted by the way they emotionally reacted, calmer and far more physically. For example, the elders weep with joy as the lovers dance. The mystery of their agelessness was revealed to me after many months of studying the rhythms and compositional qualities of this civilizations music. After the day’s brutal heat and two hours of music a hand was extended to me and we walked an hour to the edge of this great lake in an area which had been previously forbidden to me. The first sun had already set. My guide walked into the lake along with two hundred other members of the tribe, it was encouraged for me to do the same. The water was warm and a calm, sleepy sensation gently consumed me. The second sun was setting. I relaxed. I saw the ice form at the edge of the lake, yet I didn’t panic. Something changed in my mind as the water froze over me. I woke with everyone the next day as the suns melted the ice. The frozen lake, heated by the suns and frozen by the cold is what kept them young, both physically and in spirit. We smiled. The Lovers danced.
